In 2001, I stayed with this village family outside of Udaipur in Rajasthan, India. They were only eating one meal per day due to severe drought. Yet, they showed tremendous kindness and hospitality to us. That was when I first realized the impact on families and communities of not having enough clean water. We helped them to dig an irrigation ditch for their crops but it seemed like there should be a better solution to this problem. It's a situation that affects millions of people and that I want to try to help make sure everyone has the clean water they need.

It’s also a time when America spends around $500 billion on Christmas gifts. That's more than $600 per person. This Christmas, I'm taking a step back -- I want to give more than gifts that fit in boxes.
