This Septmeber I am writing a different story/anecdote/aspect of my life as a kid growing up in Orissa and the grave situation there with respect to water. 30 days of September. 30 stories of water.

I grew up in small town India. Being part of a middle class joint family I had a good healthy childhood, with an acute sense of how lucky I was compared to hundreds of other kids I met on the streets everyday. Lucky for being able to go to school. Lucky for three square meals. Lucky for drinking water.

However, I had no idea of the extent of my fortune till I moved to the United States 4 years ago. I now live in an NYC apartment where I drink water from the tap.

I now drink water from the tap.

I have to say the above sentence a few times to remind myself of how phenomenal that fact is. Like most people, I took this fact for granted. And I realize that I shouldn't. Being able to drink water from the tap - with confidence that it is safe, clean and germ-free is tantamount to an extraordinary life event for a lot of people back home.

I spent the first 18 years of my life in the state of Orissa in India and owe a lot to it. Things are still pretty grim back home when it comes to access to clean water.
