800 million people live without access to clean water. For my 40th birthday, I want to help change that.

On May 8th of this year, I turned 40. For a long time, this birthday was not a day that I was looking forward to.

But last fall, that changed. I heard charity: water founder Scott Harrison say that 800 million people around the world live without access to clean water. I also heard him tell stories of the amazing things that happen when communities gain access to clean water. Then, he mentioned that people can donate their birthdays to help bring clean water to those who need it.

Suddenly, I was looking forward to my 40th birthday.

Instead of gifts, I asked for my age in dollars from friends and family. Every penny of the money we've raised will directly fund clean water projects in developing countries. Even better, charity: water will show us exactly which projects we funded once they've been fully completed (which takes about 18 months). That means we'll know the locations and names of the communities we helped.

So far, my friends and family (and even strangers) have astounded me with their generosity, and as of June 19 we've raised money to provide clean drinking water to 56 people! Amazing.

With just a few days left before the campaign closes, I'm hoping a few more people will jump on board, make a donation (large or small), and help us increase the number of people whose lives will be changed by gaining access to clean water.

So often, it's hard to know what we can practically do to make a difference in others' lives. This feels about as practical as it gets.
