Why Steven Harper is fundraising for clean water

Recently, I joined the committee at Charity: Water for our launch into the UK.

Honestly, I felt honoured and privileged to be able to share time, ideas and experience with people far greater than myself. Sharing our hearts and passion to see people with access to clean water filled me with delight. But on my drive home from the meeting, my heart felt uneasy and my mind was racing with questions. The biggest one was this...

'Am I just talking the talk?'

I couldn't get the idea out of my head that giving simply isn't enough. That talking a big game doesn't always get the job done. That our words are wasted without action.

I have been raised to be someone of compassion, of challenge, and inspiration to those around me, so I decided to stop talking, and start walking.

For #walkthewalk I'm giving my birthday. The only gifts I want are for this cause.

In places far worse than our pretty little lives, women and children walk for water to live, provide and sustain their family.

The average time it takes to get water (not clean) is between 2-4 hours. Everyday.

So for the week of my birthday (26-30th September) I'll be walking. Everywhere.

Just to break it down a little, I will be walking at least 18 miles (29km) a day, which is a fraction of the total approximate distance covered globally, of people walking for water. (20 Million km per day).

I want to provide a clean water well for an entire community, which will cost approximately £7,500 ($10,000). That would not only change the life of one individual, but the socio economic impact will be life changing.

I have also decided to add a couple of incentives for those who want to help/see me suffer:

@ £5,000 ($6,650) // I will add the charity: water jerry can to my load. (unfilled)

@ £7,500 ($10,000) // I will go BARE FOOTED.

@ £15,000 ($19,910) // I will walk with 2 jerry cans (both FILLED).

Remember, you can give after the week but I need to reach the targets BEFORE the 26th September in order to carry the extra loads and go bare footed, so don't waste time thinking about donating. Whatever you can give, helps.
