The time to make a difference in the world is now. One person can't solve all of the problems plaguing society, but we can, collectively, make a marked improvement on the lives of others, particularly those less fortunate.

So, in order to make a positive difference in the world, I am pledging my birthday to the Charity:Water program. Charity:Water pools donations together to go to communities in third-world nations and build water infrastructure where none exists.

What does "pledging my birthday" mean? Well, simply put, if you were planning on purchasing a gift for my birthday, or even just buying a funny card, I'd instead prefer if you took that money, no matter how small, and donate to this campaign.

I've set this goal to $350, which, when combined with other campaigns, accounts for 11 people getting access to clean water. I promise you, even the $2.99 plus postage you'd spend on a card for me would be better served helping these people build a well.

Please take a moment and read the boilerplate text below, and perhaps check out the website for more information about what they do and deeper context about what a lack of water does to communities. As a man, I absolutely did not understand just how important having clean water near a school is for a girl entering puberty. The testimonials they present are truly eye-opening about how much of our modern life is impossible without running water.

Many of us have no idea what it's like to be thirsty. We have plenty of water to drink -- even the water in our toilets is clean!

But many people around the world don’t have that luxury. Every day, about 1,400 children die from diseases caused by unsafe water and poor sanitation. But it doesn’t have to be that way. There are simple solutions like drilled wells, spring protections and BioSand filters that help provide clean water to communities around the world.

I started this fundraising campaign to help charity: water build these types of projects around the world, and I'm looking for anyone who can help me.
