Why Cigi Manning is fundraising for clean water

This past weekend my lovely, generous, parents asked me what I wanted for my birthday coming up in February. I, of course, said I don’t need anything, as they've already given me all the best opportunities in life and I would be super happy with just spending time with them over dinner ...

That was before I travelled to NY this week and was inspired by a story of a caring and giving 9 year old girl, Rachel, who asked her family to help her give the gift of clean water to 10 people for her birthday instead of getting gifts. The story is heart wrenching but really powerful in the outcome of her generous wish, you can see her story in the video below.

For my birthday this year I also want to be a part of the charity: water program building more water projects around the globe. I'm hoping through providing access to clean water, we can enable a brighter future for the children of these communities by allowing them to focus on learning and development instead of sourcing water and fighting sickness / disease.

I’ve donated $350 giving 10 people access to clean water. If you’re able to and would like to contribute, I’m hoping to get as many $34 donations as possible before my 34th birthday, any donations will make a big difference. 100% of the money raised will be used to build clean water projects, and when they’re complete, charity: water will send us photos and GPS coordinates so we can see the exact community we helped. I can’t wait to share those updates with you!

Thanks to our local partner HELVETAS USA, support from the surrounding community, and your generosity to the charity water campaign, 600 people in Mozambique have access to clean and safe water!

You helped fund a well with a handpump for a community in Mozambique, implemented by our local partner HELVETAS USA. We rely on the expertise of local partners like HELVETAS USA to choose the best solution for each unique situation. In this case, HELVETAS USA’s thorough understanding of how to implement effective, sustainable water projects in their area led them to choose a well with a handpump.

Wells access subsurface aquifers, which are better protected from microbial contamination than surface water and provide a more reliable supply of water during dry seasons and droughts. Construction begins with studies to identify the most suitable location. Once a location is selected and the aquifer is reached, the well is lined, disinfected, tested, and fitted with a handpump to bring water to the surface.

Along with implementing water projects, our local partners also facilitate sanitation and hygiene initiatives to help promote everyone’s long-term health. These initiatives are often championed by community members themselves, who work hard to create positive change within their community.

Clean water means education, income, and health—especially for women and girls. It truly changes everything. Thank you for funding clean water and transforming futures for 600 people in Mozambique!

More detailed update to come in 6 months... for now, here’s some info on where your money is making an impact!

You fundraised and because of your hard work, families in Mozambique will soon have clean water to drink. Mozambique underwent a civil war that led to extreme poverty and severely unhealthy living conditions. In addition, floods and earthquakes exacerbate the growing water crisis. With the 22nd highest child mortality rate in the world, every year 82,000 children in Mozambique don't make it to the age of five.

Recently, Mozambique has made incredible strides toward development, and providing access to clean water is a major priority. Thanks to you, our partner organization, HELVETAS USA, is busy working on 122 projects. When those projects are complete, we'll collect GPS coordinates, photos, and other details about each community to show you the impact you’ve made in Mozambique.

Thank you all so much again for adding to the donations. All the best for the year ahead!

    Hey everybody!

Thank you all again, so much, for your generosity and support to our water campaign! The teams have combined our funds with others that were collected during the same time period and have sent out money out into the field to start building projects. In less than 15 months we will get a report on where the money went and who we were able to help! It’s going to be pretty neat to see, can’t wait to share!

If your interested to learn more about the process you can click the following link: https://www.charitywater.org/our-approach/dollars-to-projects/

If you’ve been thinking about what you can do to help raise more funds... here’s a link to pledge your birthday: https://www.charitywater.org/get-involved/pledge-birthday

Once again, thank you for all the support.

    Lots of love, Cigi

Thank you so much to each of you, 55 people will be getting access to clean water! The campaign is still open for 27 days and it will take approximately 30-60 days following that for us to find out where our funds are going to help out! Appreciate your support for the cause. I’m very lucky to have such generous friends and family. Thank you all again. Can’t wait for the updates to come in.
