Why Diane Pauley is fundraising for clean water

I applied to work at charity: water. When I came back from Seattle last year I was on a mission for well over five months to work at a nonprofit. And each one that I applied to I fell a little more in love with, especially charity: water. I watched interviews with their CEO, read up on staff profiles and learned exactly why water was the sole focus of their charity. It's because Scott Harrison, founder and CEO, is a regular guy.

He's no different than you or me. And he reached a moment where he felt like he wanted, no needed, to do something bigger with his life. I felt that almost four years ago now. That same exact idea that maybe there's more than 'making money and enjoying the good life.' Maybe I, you, me, we can be a part of something bigger.

Scott Harrison left his comfy job and traveled with do-good organizations witnessing the plight of people -- families, children, brothers, sisters, wives, husbands, sons, daughters -- like us around the world. While those organizations treated the illnesses that were running rampant, Harrison found the source of the sickness. It was all in the water. The dirty water people were drinking because it's all they knew and had access to.

After that, Harrison made it his life's mission to help end the world's water crisis. Something so simple. Something so small we take for granted and waste day in and day out. I'm conscious of the fact that I leave my water running too long when I'm brushing my teeth and doing my dishes. I know that I take for granted the fact that I get to eat at restaurants where sometimes I neglect the free and clean water put in front of me. Or the filtered water in my refrigerator.

The lack of clean water in our neighbors' -- our fellow human beings -- lives is something I cannot fathom. To have to make a long day's trek to access dirty, not clean, water to cook with and clean their clothes with and bathe with prevents them from being able to finish school, let alone go to school. Sometimes there is only enough water to do one activity with. Most times the family's needs get priority and I've read stories about women not being able to bathe. Not being able to feel clean, let alone beautiful.

I can only speak personally, but I know I complain about far less and to know that this need exists and that I don't need to work at charity: water to contribute to this cause that can change lives is unbelievable.

And I thank charity: water for giving me and thousands of others the opportunity to donate a special day, a birthday, to do something great. To be a part of something much bigger than us.

I turn 28 on May 25th. While I'm still in my twenties I want to do a small thing to be a part of big change. So I'm donating my birthday this year to charity: water. What's that mean?

Since charity: water is 100% transparent with where their money goes, every donation given can be tracked and you can see where your money is going. Every cent goes to fund clean water projects around the world. When the project's completed, charity: water sends photos and GPS coordinates of the community you helped. Of the community we can help together.

All I ask is if you have come to know me over the past few years here on social media and through my work and my words -- and if my words have ever inspired, encouraged or motivated you -- I just ask that you check-in with your heart to see if you feel called to move and be a part of this movement alongside me. Instead of writing me a birthday note or sending me well wishes this year, I would love it if you would be so kind to pass on your love by contributing whatever you feel called to, to this campaign. To someone, somewhere, who really needs a little something.

I chose a campaign goal of $850 because if we're able to raise that much we will be able to give 28 deserving people access to clean water.

Together, let's give a little. So we can help a lot.
