Why Femi Sokoya is fundraising for clean water

I want to challenge you. I want to make you think AND do. In this season where it's so easy to talk about what we hate, what we dislike, what we're fighting against, can you do something for someone? Do something for someone else. Just do the thing. People who don't take up this challenge will call you out for picking the wrong thing to fight for. Ignore them. Join me in doing something for good regardless of the kick back - even if it's not this thing. I'm going to do 1 push up for every dollar donated up to 10,006 for a charity water well through the end of the year. I'll record them with witnesses so I can hit 10,006 by the end of the year. charity:water might end the campaign earlier, but I believe in my friends and family to beat that deadline, too.

Why water?
The two most basic ways to help people come out of poverty is clean water to prevent sickness and sustain the community through promotion of cleanliness and road infrastructure for transportation of goods. Water is an incentive to the building of roads. People with clean water who are treated with medicine are less likely to get sick again. Economically, there is an incentive to work hard to reach that community with a road, connecting distant areas.

Why charity:water?
I've heard about them over and over again. They are focused on working with the local community and not just building something that is unsustainable to make people feel good. They also partnered with Google to perform analytics to make sure that the people trained to fix the well locally are aware of when the well isn't working.

There are many other things I could have done. Want to punish me for my stupidity? Donate.

Many of us have no idea what it's like to be thirsty. We have plenty of water to drink -- even the water in our toilets is clean!

But many people around the world don’t have that luxury. Every day, about 1,400 children die from diseases caused by unsafe water and poor sanitation. But it doesn’t have to be that way. There are simple solutions like drilled wells, spring protections and BioSand filters that help provide clean water to communities around the world.

I started this fundraising campaign to help charity: water build these types of projects around the world, and I'm looking for anyone who can help me.

Please donate to my campaign -- anything you can give is a huge help.

100% of the money will be used to build clean water projects, and when they’re complete, charity: water will send us photos and GPS coordinates so we can see the exact community we helped.

This is the best thing I've seen arise from political frustration, and it's a cause close to my heart. I wish I was in a position to give more.

I want to thank you for going on this journey with me in whatever ways you did. Today is the LAST day to donate to this campaign. Share the link if you will - https://my.charitywater.org/femi-sokoya/push-others-up. I want to say that this started out as me checking my geographic privilege and trying to do something rather than get into online political arguments. I firmly believe that there are better things in life to do than engage in divisiveness. Create, give, share, do something positive. I'm still at 4200 push-ups and hope to change that a little bit tonight, but I'll still work my way to 10006 by the end of the year. It's a lot of work - virtually 100 each day when taking out holiday business. Your support for me in this has given me 3 important lessons: 1) it is always harder than you think to pull people away from division, 2) a small group of people can make a big difference (at LEAST 92 people will get clean water!), and 3) there are ALWAYS opportunities to be positive and add to the world when things seem to be going crazy elsewhere. My faith was really important in making the decision, but you all gave me something to look forward to in these endeavors in the future.

To all the anonymous donors - I still get your name in updates, and I thank you...so so much.

Thanks and God Bless. 38 people -> 92 clean water recipients....Shalom.

I have been remiss again in updates. Last night, as I was just able to share with co-workers and superiors, I did the thing I was dreading....I attempted 500 push-ups in one night. Now I've already talked about by doing sets of 5 and 10 every minute or so makes big numbers much easier. Try doing 5 push-ups every minute for 100 minutes. I hit the goal and made it to bed by 11pm. Needless to say I won't be doing another push-up for a few days, but more people have donated. We're currently at $2740 and I've completed 4200 push-ups total -signing my name for every 10. I really appreciate those who have donated especially two individuals who will remain relatively nameless, but who have made up for (to date) 36% of the total donated amount. You all are amazing and have done something to remind yourselves and me of the capacity people have to do good and how grateful I am to have access to clean water within a few steps virtually 24/7. With the final 8 days, feel free to share with others, but don't feel obligated. Those of you I see in person, I'll keep you update with my march on to 10000. 5800 more to go! God Bless.........(and thanks to RT and KW).
