The photo above is of my grandmother’s water pitcher, which became my mother’s, and is now mine. Every time I fill it with pure clean water, I sense my grandmother’s and mother’s hands within mine. Such a gift.

And yet, I know there are poor women around the world who walk for miles to the nearest water, fill a vessel as large as they can carry, and bring it back home for their families. But the water is mostly not pure and clean. Every day, about 1,400 children die from diseases caused by unsafe water and poor sanitation. Even when disease does not strike, the family’s entire existence is affected by the daily grind. Mothers have little time to give their children the quality of care we give ours. Girls leave school as soon as they are big enough to carry water. Thus poverty and hardship are handed down from generation to generation.

I started this campaign in hope that we can break the cycle for some families. As great as is the gift of my heirloom pitcher, they need a greater gift - access to a nearby source of pure clean water. For them, I envision a future when generations hand down a story of the day a new well started giving them pure, clean water, and changed their lives forever. I researched charity: water and believe their promise that 100% of the money we donate will be used to build clean water projects. When the projects are complete, they will send us photos and GPS coordinates so we can see the exact community we helped.
