Many of us have no idea what it's like to be thirsty. We have plenty of water to drink, take long luxurious baths, fill up massive pools, water grass we never stand on, even the water in our toilets is clean!

But many people around the world don’t have that luxury. Every day, about 1,400 children die from diseases caused by unsafe water and poor sanitation. But it doesn’t have to be that way. There are simple solutions like drilled wells, spring protections and BioSand filters that help provide clean water to communities around the world.

I loved the idea of donating my birthday not only as a way to take the self importance out of "my day" but also to be grateful for the things I had no control over. Like many of you, I had no choice in which country I was born. Luckily it was one that was able to provide me with clean water.

Unfortunately not everyone is that lucky, because that's all it is is luck. If I were born into a country that had little to no access to clean water in the 21st century I would hope that someone who lives above their means would find it in their heart to help me gain access to water. Something that seems like a basic human right.

Since I can not volunteer my time at the moment the best thing I can do is donate a small portion of the money I make to help build these types of projects around the world.

Here is a great example of a little goes a long ways. I am asking my friends and family to donate $26, because at 26 years old I know people with $26 extra dollars. my age in dollars, instead of sending me cards or presents. I am so priveledged I do not need anything more in my life. My goal is $910 because I want to help 26 people gain access to clean water. My friend Freddie also has a birthday in February so we have joined forces to try and make a difference in 26 people's lives.

The best thing I have found about this organization is that 100% of the money will be used to build clean water projects. They have separate donors to pay their employees and other bills so that every penny donated goes to exactly what they say it will. When they’re complete, charity: water will send us photos and GPS coordinates so we can see the exact community we helped.
