I turn 21 on April 4th. Here in America, when a young adult turns 21 they are legally allowed to drink alcohol – making it a pretty big birthday. The typical tradition is to go on a “21 run” which means to go to all the local bars with friends and get free birthday shots, drinks, etc. The 21st Birthday in today’s culture is one to be (not) remembered, one that is wild and fun! It’s the “drinking” birthday that usually ends with the special person hugging the porcelain throne. Haha
I want to celebrate my 21st but I’ve never been the biggest fan of drinking alcohol; drinking water is more my thing. So my first idea was “let’s go out to the bars and all get water shots!? Fun, right?!” My friends were not amused. Thinking about it more, I realized I didn’t need alcohol to enjoy my birthday, and God has blessed me with more than I could imagine so I really didn’t need anything to be given to me. Then I remembered this: I want to be different and I want to make a difference. Thanks to my friend Kendall who shared this idea with me last year, I found Charity: Water’s Donate Your Day. This campaign is where instead of asking for gifts or anything like that – you ask friends and family to donate to help get clean drinking water to those in need.
For those of you who know me, you know that my dream job is to get clean drinking water to people around the world. That’s why I’m majoring in Public Health. So what better way to start my mission in life than by donating my 21st birthday? After all, it’s a Drinking birthday, why should I be drinking expensive alcohol when there are people dying from lack of clean drinking water? That doesn’t seem fair to me.
So I’m asking you, for my 21st Birthday, will you buy me a drink? But of water, not alcohol. And it’s actually not for me, but people who need it.
If you would consider buying me alcohol for my 21st birthday, I hope that you would instead, take that money and donate it here. From $1 - $100 (I heard alcohol can be expensive haha), every little bit helps! I cannot emphasize that enough, if all you can spare is $1, I will be tremendously grateful!
I set the goal of this campaign to $2,100. Get it? 21 hundred? 21? I’m cheesy. I know that sounds daunting, but go big or go home right? I think this amount is accomplishable, but even if we don’t make it – every little bit helps.
God Bless you guys. Thanks for reading my little spiel. I hope you’ll buy me a drink ;) #21 #nothingiscrazy
