Today is the start of my Year 65 Clean Water Campaign for charity:water. It was meant to launch with a bit of a party tonight, which won’t happen. The Kirkby 10k has already been postponed until next year. However, the 40th Great North Run is still scheduled to take place in September. Its will be my 18th and last, and I have already started training for the event.

Whilst I know we have a lot to worry about close to home, my campaign to bring clean water to those without it is even more urgent in these uncertain times. If you are ill, clean water is essential for drinking and washing. Globally, we are told that washing our hands helps prevent the spread of the virus. However, according to charity: water 40% of the world’s population lacks access to basic hand washing facilities, a figure that rises to 75% in sub-Saharan Africa.

In spite of the pandemic (or because of it) charity: water continues to work tirelessly to ensure access to clean and safe water for drinking and good hygiene.

So, can I ask you to do two things for those who don’t have the luxury of clean drinking water on tap:

• Make a small contribution (no more than £25)
• Spread the word.
