The Sahara Shuffle is a fundraising campaign created by two athletes, Amanda "Chett" Matchett and Eric Wheeler, who will attempt to run 250km (about 155 miles) across the Egyptian Sahara in February 2014. This equates to running a full marathon every day for six days, while carrying all necessary food and supplies on our backs. With temperatures reaching as high as 50°C / 122°F, the only thing provided will be rationed water and a tent to sleep in at night by race organizers, as well as medical care in the event of an emergency.
100% of your donation will fund our water project (more info at www.charitywater.org/100percent). Your donation is fully tax-deductible, and you will receive a tax receipt via email once your donation is complete.
None of your donation will go to race entry or personal travel fees.
About the Athletes
Amanda "Chett" Matchett, 25, from Calgary, Alberta, Canada and Eric Wheeler, 25, from Huron, South Dakota, have lived parallel lives since the day they met over four years ago at their alma mater in Moorhead, MN. After graduating, both have successfully kick-started their careers as marketing professionals and started training and competing in the sport of triathlon. Most recently they connected in September 2012 in Banff, Alberta, Canada during the Saunders Subaru Banff Triathlon, both placing top 10 in their age groups. Together, they naturally feed off each others spirits; they are committed, dedicated, and ready for their next adventure with Charity: Water and RacingThePlanet's 4Deserts series.
Message from the Athletes
First and foremost, thank you for your already generous consideration of donating. We have been great friends since the first day we met and have experienced quite a lot together: graduating college, working through marketing internships, competition in triathlons, and supporting each other through the loss of both our fathers. It has been through these experiences that we found strength and courage to continue to push ourselves to the next level--intellectually, emotionally, and now physically.
The Sahara Race will be the hardest thing we both have ever endured. It will be a journey of personal growth, perseverance, and change. Change not only in ourselves, but most importantly change in the African communities for which we race.
Sincerely,
Chett (@chett12) and Eric (@backyardlemons)
Thanks to everyone who came out to, "lets get meady for the needy" last night!!! You helped Eric and I reach our goal, while also helping out with the Calgary Flood. I can't express enough, how grateful I am. With love in my heart, running on my mind, and friendship all around us - thank you!!
So inspiring Eric! I can't wait to here about this run :)
Eric,
I may make jokes about how crazy you are for doing this and how there are much more "sane" ways of staying fit, but in all honesty, all I feel when you talk about this race is anticipation. You light up every time it works its way into conversation making it hard not to notice how much it means to you. I can't help but feel inspired to see you glowing, knowing what you are going to put yourself through, what challenge you’re willingly committing to overcome. You've said in the past that you're often a pretty stubborn individual, but I like to think it's your tenacity that fuels you to accomplish these obstacles. Once you have an idea in your head, there's little chance of turning you another way, and although that may not always work in my favor, I admire that quality in you more than almost any other.
"Challenges are what make life interesting; overcoming them is what makes life meaningful."
With love
Chett, what you're doing is not only inspirational, but extremely admirable. It takes a lot of guts (and a little touch of psychosis) to put yourself out there and do something that is beyond what most would consider their limits. I could tell within 5 minutes of meeting you why Eric adores you so much, and I have complete faith that you will finish this race with a smile (or grimace) and am so happy to support your journey. Just keep shufflin' :)
